Budapest Bound!!!
Sep 06, 2010
|
Never, ever did I think our first trip to Europe would be to Budapest. Even more unlikely, that we would be going to the Age-Group World Championships to compete with some of the best triathletes. Noelle and I leave Tuesday for Paris (not KY.), and then arrive early Wednesday in Budapest. I will try to stay in touch each day to let you know how it's going, and what we're up to. I do know Thursday there is a parade of athletes, and we'll have a chance to practice on the bike and run courses. Same for Friday. Saturday we can watch the "Elite" men race. Sunday morning T1 opens at 5am, and I think my age-group wave goes off around 9am. Whew! Joining us from Lexington on the USA team will be Susan Bradley-Cox (making her 21st World's trip!), Allison Stewart, and Kevin Ryan. Philip Cullen is racing for Ireland.
What makes this race so different is the travel. I have never had to break down my bike, fly to the race, and then put it back together. The USA team has bike mechanics, but they're not there to baby us. In addition to being in a foreign country, I will probably be surrounded by some really talented athletes. I don't know what to expect on that front.
I'm looking at this as a fun experience, an adventure, and hope to do some sight seeing. Everyone who has been to Budapest tells me it's a wonderful city to visit. I'll let you know! Bon voyage!

Great Racing Kentucky Triathletes!
Aug 30, 2010
|
|
From Louisville to Chicago to Bowling Green, the last couple of weeks have shown Lexington area based triathletes are a force. Back on August 22nd, SBR of KY staff member, Allison Stewart set a COURSE RECORD for women in the Bowling Green triathlon. The bike course featured a long, long hill, and a steep, steep downhill so it was no easy ride. Congrats to Allison!
This past Sunday, many of our sisters and brothers in triathlon endured the heat at Ironman Louisville. I have total admiration for every one of you who attempted and completed this monster distance. What an accomplishment! But to win your age group, and do it by a large margin, is really something to talk about. That's exactly what SBR of KY member George Van Meter did, and punched his ticket to Kona. Wow! George smashed the competition for his first trip to the big island. Read more about George and his triathlon journey in our member profile coming soon. (Hats off to Beth Atnip for working hard as Race Director of Ironman Louisville. Beth knows the sport, understands the athletes needs, and works her but off...that makes for a super event. We appreciate all she does behind-the-scenes.)
And while Louisville was rockin, Chicago drew thousands and thousands of triathletes for racing Sunday. We're proud of SBR of KY customers Alan Siebenthaler, Mike Elder and Melinda Drake for competing and doing well in the Windy City.
Plus there's more racing to come with Tri For Sight Sunday, Sept. 5th, and the RJ Corman Duathlon and 5K on October 2nd.
And oh yea, Susan Bradley-Cox, Phillip Cullen, SBR of KY staffers Kevin Ryan and Allison Stewart, and yours truly, will be representing the U-S-A on Sept. 12th in Budapest for the Age-Group World Championship. The Bluegrass is well represented here, there, and around-the-world in triathlon!

I'll be in Louisville for the rest of this week working the Ironman with Beth. If you need to get in touch with me give Tony a call at SBRKY. I hope to see everyone next week and at the Tri for Sight. If you're in Louisville and you see me make sure you yell. Have fun and stay safe.

Racing This Weekend
Aug 20, 2010
|
|
Just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone racing this weekend safe travels and lots of luck. I know we have a small group from SBRKY heading down to the Bowling Green Sprint Triathlon this weekend but if you're racing somewhere else have fun and race fast.
On another note don't forget that there will be a ride leaving from SBRKY tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. If you feel like brushing up on your tire changing skills I will have a tire changing clinic at 8:30 AM for anyone interested. There's no charge for the clinic so I encourage you to come on down before the ride and check it out.
Finally, we still have the Newton Demo shoes in the store for a few more days so if you were interested in trying a pair on and taking them for a run come on by this weekend and we'll set you up.
Have a great weekend, hope to see you on the road.

SBRKY Newton Running Clinic
Aug 14, 2010
|
Just wanted to give a quick thank you to everyone that came by today and made the Newton Running Clinic a success. It was great to see many old friends as well as some new faces in the store today. I hope everyone enjoyed learning about and running in the Newton shoes today. A special thanks to Tom from Newton Running who came down to Lexington today to help us put on the event and field questions on the product. If anyone out there wanted to come to the clinic today but didn't have the time stop by anytime next week as we will have some demo shoes in the store that we can let you run in. Good luck to everyone running the MIDSUMMERS NIGHT RUN tonight, try and stay cool.

Great Races Coming Up
Aug 07, 2010
|
|
Hard to believe August is here, and Fall is right around the corner. My races have taken a bit of a back seat to getting Swim Bike Run of KY moving forward. I had good results at Heart & Sole in Versailles last April (seems like a year ago),and at the Half-Ironman in Kansas in June (awesome experience). Since then I've continued training, and grown more and more excited about racing in late August. I will have taken about a two-month plus break from competition which may not be all bad. I have no injuries or pain right now so that's very encouraging. My next race is in Bowling Green on Aug. 22nd. I had already planned to be in B-G that weekend because my youngest daughter will be a Freshman at WKU, and is moving into her dorm that weekend. That's exciting enough. The B-G tri is a sprint, and will be a great warm-up. Then I'll probably race Tri For Sight on Sept. 5th for the 4th year in a row. I had my best triathlon time wise last year in Lexington, and I ride the bike course every week during training so I'm very familiar with it. Then it's onto Budapest for the Age-Group Worlds Competition. It's our first trip to Europe, and we're excited about seeing this beautiful city. As Susan Bradley-Cox has told me, triathlons are my ticket to travel. Amen! I feel blessed to train and compete in this great sport. What a blast! I hope all of you are having as much fun.

Out of Retirement
Jul 31, 2010
|
|
Today was the Lame Duck Triathlon at Mallard Point in Georgetown, KY. What appeared to be a dreadful day (due to weather) in the morning turned out to be a beautiful day for a race. This was my first race of the year and although I only did the swim, bike as a relay it was really great to get out and compete at such a fun event. This race has such a great vibe the entire time you're surrounded by the smiling faces of other competetors, volunteers and spectators. In addition to the atmosphere at the Lame Duck it provides one of the most challenging race courses for this disance anywhere. If you missed it this year, sign up early next year and try it for yourself.

Since bike labor is increasing at SBRKY I've decided to bring in a new mechanic to help me out with the work load. If you have any questions Otie will be here Monday through Saturday to handle your cycling needs.

“Six-weeks to your next triathlon”
Jul 04, 2010
|
What kind of training should you be doing in the weeks leading to a triathlon? How do you prepare the night before and the day of a race? There are plenty of nutrition choices available, but which ones will work for you? What can you expect on the Tri For Sight race course on September 5th?
Our third "Six-weeks to your next triathlon" program begins this month, and it will answer these questions and much more! Pro Triathlete Tony White will be leading this six-week program that includes six clinics, and daily workout plans. Tony just placed in the top ten at the Bluegrass 10,000 so he can help you with running in a triathlon and your warm-up. He's also one of our swim coaches at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky, and has competed against some of the best in the world of triathlon. We are lucky to have Tony's expertise as a resource, and I am confident he will have you ready for a great experience at Tri For Sight.
Here's what Ashley Drobney had to say about our last "Six-weeks to your next triathlon" program " led by Coach Beth Atnip. " I don't think I could have done it without your expertise, support, and encouragement. I really enjoyed my first tri experience, and I'm looking forward to my next. Please pass on thanks to the Swim Bike Run employees. Everyone was extremely helpful and inspirational. I will most definetly encourage new athletes to pay Swim Bike Run of KY a visit."
Our six-week program begins July 24th. Please check our Program tab on our homepage for more details, and to register. Also feel free to call the tri center, and talk to Tony directly about what he has planned. This is a great opportunity to learn from a pro!

Central Kentucky Triathlon Race Series
Jun 01, 2010
|
If you are looking for a challenge, and a new way to compete in local triathlons, then set your sights on the "Central Kentucky Triathlon Race Series." Coach Beth Atnip is the force behind combining three races in this area into one race series. We asked Coach Beth about why she came up with the idea, how the winners will be decided, and where you can register for the series.
1. Why did you come up with this idea of the race series? "I decided to start a sprint series this season to support continued growth of our sport, and to recognize three great races in the Central Kentucky area. I also felt with the addition of Swim Bike Run of Kentucky, this was a perfect fit! As a race director, I felt we needed to push our local athletes to participate in all three events. The Tri For Sight and Lame Duck have been around for a while, and with the addition of the Markey Race for Women's Cancer, I thought this would be a perfect time to introduce a series. I also think this series provides a structured goal for triathletes, and provides them with the opportunity to race at three fun, and safe races this summer."
2. Explain how this will work for athletes who want to do all three? "Any athlete who participates in and finishes all three races will automatically be entered into the series. This means that they will receive an additional series t-shirt at the final race (Tri For Sight). Also, everyone who is entered in the series, and finishes all three races will be eligible for great door prizes to be given out at the awards ceremony at the Tri For Sight. We will be giving away awesome tri gear, to include a SET OF WHEELS, A WETSUIT, TRANSITION BAG, and other goodies. Road ID will also be providing us with wonderful door prizes."
3. How will you decide winners? "The winners of the series will be decided by taking all three combined times from the three races, and the person (male and female) with the lowest combined time will be named the winner of the series. We will be giving out awards for top 5 male and female finishers of the series. Currently Mideast Multisport and Road ID are sponsoring the event, and we hope to bring on additional sponsors soon."
4. Where do you go for information? "To be eligible for the series, you must register for each individual race (the duathlon does not count towards the series, only participation in the triathlon will enter you into the series). After registration is finished for the Tri For Sight, we will be able to determine who is entered into the series. Lame Duck and Tri For Sight tend to sell out, so please make sure you register for those events early." For updates about the series, please visit: http://www.triforsight.com/central-kentucky-triathlon-race-series/

Memphis in May 2010
May 24, 2010
|
I intended to blog over the weekend and let everyone know what was going on with the KY triathletes at Memphis in May. Unfortunately early wake up combined with 93 degree days equal me passing out early every night.
As it turned out when we arrived in Millington, TN we learned that this was the last year that Memphis in May will be at its current location. Next year the event is moving to Mississippi so it was time to say goodbye to good ole Millington.
Lexington triathletes had an amazing showing at the event and the Swim Bike Run of Kentucky support tent was overflowing all weekend long. Although I was unable to race this year I would have to say what for all the years I have done the event this was the larges group I've seen there and to have them all in one pace around one tent was really cool. I'll spare you a list of splits and results but they should be available on the Memphis in May website.
Great job to all that participated whereever you are from. The day was hot, conditions were brutal and judging by the activity in the medical tent "finishing" was more of an accomplishment this year than a fast time. We'll have pictures up on our facebook sight soon. Have a great week.

Triathletes & Family Support
May 18, 2010
|
Making a six-week commitment to our triathlete program is no small thing. With our busy lives it's hard to squeeze training into a day full of family, school, job, and the unexpected. Believe me I know! Starting a small business like Swim Bike Run of Kentucky in addition to holding down a full-time TV job, keeping track of a daughter getting ready to graduate from high school, and taking care of responsibilities at home leave little time for training. But I'm also lucky my wife, Noelle, supports me taking off on 90-minute bike rides, swimming 3 times a week, and long runs. That support at home is crucial. It really sweetens the pot when you cross the finish line, and your family is there to support you. It's a sacrifice, and I thank God every workout I'm allowed to make this a part of my life.
I don't know Ashley, Emmy, Claire, John, Rebecca, Sarah, John, and Margo...but I'll bet all of our "Six-weeks to your next triathlon" program participants have families that are making sacrifices so they can train. I also respect these folks for making a commitment. Your first triathlon is special, and I'll be cheering them on at Spindletop on June 27th when they cross the finish line. I'll bet their families will be there too. They have a stake in this too!

Tri Program Starts Saturday!
May 11, 2010
|
A busy March, a busier April, and an even busier May! Thanks to all the folks who have dropped by Swim Bike Run of Kentucky this Spring for all their tri gear- including Amy and Tyson Carroll who bought a Scott road bike (featured in the picture). In the last few weeks we've sold Scott, Blue, and Jamis tri and road bikes. Along with lots of bike fits by Coach Eric, gait analysis, swim stroke analysis, and outfitting folks in wetsuits...we're starting our second "Six-weeks to your next triathlon" program this Saturday led by Coach Beth Atnip. She is the race director for Ironman Louisville and Tri For Sight, and is an excellent triathlete herself. If you are interested in this super set of clinics and daily workouts, please go to our Program page for details. There is still time to register before Saturday the 15th. It's a great way to get ready for the new Markey Race for Women's Cancer triathlon/duathlon on June 27th. In addition to sponsoring that race, we are also Presenting Sponsor for Lame Duck and Tri For Sight. Details on all these races are on our Race News page. On Saturday, my wife Noelle and I are also helping lead the "Ride with the Red" for the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross. Registration starts at 8am, and the rides of different lengths begin around 9:30. Lunch is at noon. This fun event is at Equus Run, and benefits local disaster relief. If you've seen the news lately, flooding has done a number on many of our Kentucky neighbors. The goal this year is 300 cyclists. Register at http://www.redcrosslexky.org
Stop by and see us at 320 North Ashland, and see what all the fun is about at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky!

Ironman Winner in Lexington Monday
May 06, 2010
|
How many of us will ever win an Ironman competition? Very few. The closest most of us will ever get to the Ironman podium is meeting a two- time winner, and this Monday night in Lexington you have that opportunity. Jordan Rapp will be here on the 10th to discuss pacing and nutrition on Ironman race day. I've never competed in an Ironman so I'm really interested in hearing how Mr. Rapp helps his body endure so many miles swimming, biking, and running. I have a Half-Ironman coming on June 6th in Kansas. I wonder how much of what the pro does... translates to me and my preparation and race. It fascinates me, and so does meeting an Ironman champion. I hope the triathletes of Kentucky will give Jordan a warm welcome Monday night. You can learn more about his visit, and an all-day training session on Saturday for tri beginners at http://www.endurancebasecamp.com/triathlon-training-clinic-for-beginners-may-8-2010/
Gary Ditsch has worked hard to put these two days together, and Swim Bike Run of Kentucky is a sponsor of Jordan Rapp's visit to Lexington. Let's welcome him to the Bluegrass!

A Happy Customer at SBR
Apr 15, 2010
|
One of the reasons we opened Swim Bike Run of Kentucky is gear and equipment for triathletes was mostly not available in this area. I bought my tri bike, race shoes, tri suits, and wetsuit...all online. No opportunity to try it on. That is not the best way to find something that fits just right. When it comes to a wetsuit, you really need to try several different sizes and brands. And if possible, swim in the wetsuit to make sure it feels snug and works for you. Don't wait until you are in a lake during a race to discover it's too big! Which brings me to Luke Powell of Louisville. He recently came to Lexington to buy a wetsuit at our tri center. We feature many different styles and prices from Aquaman and 2XU. But here's the neat thing. When you come to Swim Bike Run of Kentucky, you can do more than try it on. I'll let Luke explain. "Buying a wetsuit is a big investment, and I didn't think that trying several out in the water would even be an option. I really appreciate the customer service, and I have already told a friend that is in the market for a wetsuit about your services. I'll continue to send people your way." That's right, Luke used our Endless Pool to put each wetsuit to the test in the water. When he found the right one, he bought it. We're glad Luke came all the way from Louisville to use our services. We're even happier...he enjoyed the experience, and he's spreading the word. If you are in the market for a tri wetsuit, stop by, put it on, and take a swim. Now that's the way to make sure it fits!

Awesome Tri Bike
Apr 02, 2010
|
Look out fellows! If you see a new Scott Contessa Plasma streaking by it's probably Lauren Foster aboard! Ladies this is one awesome tri bike... fit just for you. Coach Eric worked with Lauren on her bike fit, and together they found the tri bike that fit her just right. We're excited for Lauren, and we invite all of you to take advantage of Coach Eric's certification with FIT Institute Slowtwitch. We invested in the best fit equipment available, and combined with Coach Eric's knowledge and patience, it makes for a great bike fit experience. He's booking appointments Tuesday thru Saturday. Just be warned, this is no quickie fit. Be prepared for 1 to 3-hours, and maybe even a second day of fine tuning. We take bike fits seriously, and so should you!
Find out why beginners to even the local pros are having Coach Eric do their bike fits.

Bike Fit Appointments
Mar 05, 2010
|
|
In the last two days, Coach Eric has booked seven bike fits at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky. We're excited about providing this service to Central Kentucky cyclists and triathletes. It's an area we've invested a lot of resources in. Coach Eric already had great knowledge and instincts about what makes a quality bike fit, but he wanted to take it to a new level in this area. So we sent him to FIT Institute Slowtwitch in California for a series of workshops and certification back in January. We also spared no expense with our bike fit equipment by bringing in an Exit Bike. Each appointment, like each rider, is different. There are no time limitations. One recent bike fit took more than five hours. Coach Eric is that patient, and we're that serious about making sure you are fitted right. The fee of $150 stays the same. Many people ask...is your bike fit just for people considering buying a new tri bike? No. Coach Eric also works with people already on a road or tri bike. In a perfect case, you make a bike fit appointment, you are fitted, and Coach Eric recommends the bike that best fits you. We carry several bike models, but if your fit means you need to be on something else, then we'll find it for you. We are not about selling you a bike. We are crazy about fitting you to the right bike. I can't emphasize that point enough. If you drop by SBR of KY ask Coach Eric to show you our Exit bike. If you want to make an appointment, just call him at our tri center number, 859-455-3384. Just be ready to spend some time on the Exit bike because this is no rush job.

Grand Opening Packed!
Mar 01, 2010
|
|
The staff, Noelle, and I would like to thank all of you who came to our Swim Bike Run of Ky. Grand Opening on Sunday. We couldn't be more pleased! The energy was bouncing all over the tri center. Delicious Bourbon N' Toulouse was served up by Kevin and Will...thanks guys for making it a very appetizing affair. The CompuTrainers were roaring with riders putting in a two-hour demonstration of endurance. Over at the Endless Pool, Tony and Allison from our staff were in fine form...showing our guests what an efficient swim stroke is all about. Coach Beth had plenty of folks asking about her gait analysis and lactate threshold testing...two of the special services that we offer at SBR of Ky. At our Exit bike, Coach Eric, certified by FIT Institute Slowtwitch, answered questions about bike fit. More than one hundred people put their names in the hopper for give-aways that included a 2XU tri suit, Tifosi sunglasses, a Bell helmet, and a pair of tri running shoes. (We're contacting the winners so they can pick up their goodies). Most of all it was fun seeing so many friends and supporters of SBR of Ky. Many of you have offered words of encouragement, and we so appreciate it. We've only been open a month, and your feedback has been so positive. We start our first training program on Saturday, March 6th, called "Six-Weeks to Your First Triathlon." Coach Beth will be leading you through the training and clinics. Check it out on our website under Programs. We're also taking appointments for bike fits, gait analysis, swim stroke analysis, and lactate threshold testing. It's going to be a great year in triathlon! See you soon at the next race.

Stroke analysis in the Endless Pool
Feb 17, 2010
|
When one of our staff at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky, U-K distance swimmer, Kevin Ryan took a plunge in our Endless Pool...he didn't know what to expect. Swimming in place against a current over a mirror so he could see his stroke was a different experience. He was impressed. And so was I. Watching someone swim like Ryan is a beautiful thing. As a triathlete for three-years who has worked hard to break old habits with my swim stroke, I marveled at how smoothly he stroked thru the water. That's one of the awesome aspects of using our Endless Pool. It's very intimate. Our coaches can watch you swim from just a few feet away. You have a mirror at the bottom so you can see your stroke and body roll. We can video tape both below and above water so you can see exactly what you're doing, or not doing. Our Endless Pool has 52 speeds so we can find just the right speed for your training needs. We hope you'll take full advantage of it. Book an appointment on our website under the Training tab, or call Coach Eric at the tri center, (859) 455-3384. See you in the water!

Cranking out watts on CompuTrainer
Feb 08, 2010
|
|
Thanks to all the cyclists and visitors who dropped by this weekend at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky. We had a blast. With the cold weather and snow it sure feels great getting in an awesome cycling workout inside. There's room for you. Just go to our Training page, click on Open Rides under CompuTrainer, and reserve your slot. It's easy! We also had more visitors drive quite a distance to see what we're about. Sean came from Garrard County, and Lacey from Somerset. Sunday we hosted a meeting for the group organizing the Markey Race for Women's Cancer to be held Sunday, June 27th, at U-K's Spindletop Hall. Dr.Leigh Seamon is leading this effort, and we're proud to be one of the sponsors. It's a sprint triathlon in a great location. We're also developing a six-week training program starting March 6th that will lead up to the Heart & Sole Triathlon in Versailles. Coach Beth Atnip is putting together a series of weekly clinics, and each athlete will receive a daily training plan. This is open to all athletes regardless if you're racing at Heart & Sole. Coach Beth will cover subjects like race preps, transitions, running on grass, dynamic warm-ups, basic nutrition, and race day planning. We'll even check out your bike to make sure it's safe and ready to rock! Cost is $75. Look for details soon on our website. And finally, we held a Super Bowl party complete with cycling during the first half, and munching on all the snacks in the second. All our 2XU tri suits, tops, and shorts, as well as Louie Garneau shoes and gear are all expected in this week. It's a busy time at SBR of KY. Stop by and see us!

Welcome UK Cycling Team
Jan 31, 2010
|
What a blast! Seven members of the UK Cycling Team took their turn on the CompuTrainers in our indoor cycling studio, and for 90-minutes attacked some high elevation. With George Van Meter in tow, the team saw first-hand the training advantages with this state-of-the art cycling program. They raced each other, and the entire time tracked their mph, average speed, watts, and place in the race...all the while watching, and feeling the elevation change. All that..plus keeping an eye on ESPN on another large screen! No one else in the state has this set-up. See why cyclists from Indiana, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Ashland have driven all the way to Lexington to Swim Bike Run of Kentucky. Thanks guys for visiting. We hope to see you again soon. If you want to see what CompuTrainer is all about, stop by, and your first ride is on us. Swim Bike Run of Kentucky is now open 7-days a week.

Busy Getting Ready for Opening
Jan 26, 2010
|
|
Just a few days from opening, and we're super busy at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky! The deck is being built around the Endless Pool so our coaches can video tape your swim stroke, tri products are rolling thru the doors like DeFeet socks, Tyr swim gear, a Scott USA tri bike, and a variety of nutrition (Hammer, Clif Bars, GU, Gatorade). Louie Garneau and 2XU gear are not far behind. A state-of-the art bike fit station is on the way, and we're already booking bike fits with Coach Eric Atnip (certified by FIT Institute Slowtwitch). Our first two members joined this week. Thank you Jimmy Burchett and George Van Meter! We have 3 rides this Saturday (Jan. 30th) on the CompuTrainers. Forget the snow! We're training inside. Go to Training Center on our website, and click on Open Rides under CompuTrainers. I guarentee you won't go back to your old trainer after getting an awesome workout on CompuTrainer. Dozens of bike courses around the world are available. Drop by 320 N. Ashland Ave for a visit!

Great Weekend at SBR of KY
Jan 23, 2010
|
Thanks to all the folks who came by this weekend for a preview of Swim Bike Run of Kentucky. We had lots of fun! Coach Eric debuted in the Endless Pool despite the fact the temperature was a chilly 67 degrees (the water is slowly warming). Plenty of people took advantage of the Indoor Cycling Studio, and burned it up on CompuTrainer. Those are some tough hills! One triathlete even came all the way from Cincinnati because he said Cincy has nothing like this. Glad to show you how we do it in the Bluegrass! My mentor, Susan Bradley-Cox and friends, stopped for a ride, and watched the Cats stay undefeated. Alan & Jennifer Siebenthaler dropped by. We're thrilled to be Presenting Sponsor of their Lame Duck race on July 31st. If you haven't done the duck, it's one tough race. Also some cyclists from BCC stopped in in, and loved the Indoor Cycling Studio. Thanks guys...can't wait to see you back with more riders. It was so rewarding to see so many smiling faces.

Taking your swimming to new heights
Jan 20, 2010
|
The Endless Pool arrived last night, and we arrived this morning to bring it inside the center. After some fancy crane work, and the help of several able bodied assistants, we were able to move the pool successfully inside. I took photos of the entire event, but this one was the most impressive from my point of view. Thanks to everyone we had the opportunity to see last night, and we look forward to meeting more people in the triathlon community as we get closer to opening day. Keep checking back for more information. We'll keep you up to date on the latest events.

Bike Fitting, Aquaman, and CompuTrainer
Jan 16, 2010
|
Coach Eric is back in the Bluegrass with certification by the best in the business: FIT Institute Slowtwitch! It means you get the ultimate in bike fitting. Our bike fitting station will be first class with no expense spared. Whether you are already on a bike, or you're getting ready to buy a tri bike, Coach Eric is here to give you one-on-one attention, and take all the time necessary to put you in the best position possible. As we're preparing to open the tri center on February 1st, we have a special opportunity for all of you interested in tri wetsuits. The USA rep for Aquaman, Emmanuel Millet, will be at the tri center Tuesday, Jan. 19th, from 6-7pm, to answer questions, discuss wetsuit technology, fit, and show you a variety of styles. It's your chance to try on a variety of wetsuits.
Then Jan. 23-24th we're opening the indoor cycling studio for the weekend to give you a taste of CompuTrainer. Bring your bike, and get ready to sweat. Find out why the pros love to train on this high-tech system. We'll be riding Saturday, Jan. 23, 10am-6pm, and Sunday, 1-4pm. No experience necessary! We'll show you how it works. There's a lot happening at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky!

Back in the Bluegrass
Jan 15, 2010

Got in from the airport last night at 6:15 and was happy to return home to my wife and two dogs. Today it's back to SBRKY to continue getting ready for your first visit. I truly believe that you will be happy with the fitting that I will be able to offer you. We're getting really close to opening day so keep following for updates and I look forward to seeing you soon.

One Last Look
Jan 13, 2010
|
Just thought I'd give you a look at the compound from where I've been for the last few days. We finished up today, and I'm ready to get back to Lexington, and start practicing what I've learned. Tomorrow is a day of travel; then back to the center. Hope everyone is doing well.

Coming to you from deep in the mountains
Jan 13, 2010
|
Just checking in with everyone to let you know I'm alive. I have little or no cell phone coverage where I am, and the internet goes pretty quickly so to say I'm isolated is an understatement. The good news is I'm learning a lot at the certification, and I look forward to getting back and putting it to good use. Today is my last day, and then it's back on the road to the beautiful bluegrass. I've made many good friends here, and the area is absolutely beautiful. I look forward to the opportunity to return here should it arise.
On a side note there is no lack of entertainment out here as one of the owners rescues dogs on his ranch, and we currently have 12 running around during the day. I'm a huge dog fan, and it only adds to the atmosphere and flavor of the area. Hope all is well in Lexington, and I'll do my best to try and bring some of this warmer air back your way.
(Editor's note: Coach Eric is in California this week getting his certification at FIT Institute Slowtwitch. It means if you need to be fitted for a tri bike, Coach Eric is the man to see. Swim Bike Run of Kentucky will have a state-of-the art fitting station at our center at 320 N. Ashland where Coach Eric will give you one-on-one attention, and make sure you are fitted perfectly for that next race.)

On the Road Again
Jan 10, 2010
|
Made it out to California without any hitches. Just wanted to check in with everyone and say hey. I went from 7 degrees when we left Lexington this AM to 73 degrees in Ontario, California. It's a bit colder up in the mountains where I am, but it is a beautiful area, and I've already been at work learning. hope all is well in Lexington. I'm working hard out here to help all the triathletes back home. I'll try and put something new each day I'm out here. More to follow.

Another Day in the Books
Jan 08, 2010
|
Today my dad and I got the floor down on the CompuTrainer platform. All and all it was a nice day to stay inside out of the weather. Everyday I leave the training center it looks a little different than when I arrived. On top of the CompuTrainer studio we've had several other contractors in and out of SBRKY helping us get ready to go. Tomorrow I'll be getting ready for another training trip. Sunday morning I'll be heading off to the west coast. Training that I hope will help me make your triathlon experience even better. I hope everyone is staying warm, and I look forward to seeing you at SBRKY when the doors open. Look back for updates from my trip to California.

Moving Along
Jan 08, 2010
|
I meant to post this last night, but I got caught up in the Alabama vs. Texas game before I finished the post. Just wanted to give you a fresh look at the inside of the training center. I'm on my way to SBRKY right now so hopefully I can make it down there without freezing cause it's cold out there. Stay warm and keep checking back, I'll try and keep new photos up as the transformation takes place.

News From the Store Front
Jan 06, 2010
|
Sorry it's been so quiet in the blog arena lately, but I've been busy wrapping up old jobs and starting new adventures. Today was my second full day of work for Swim Bike Run of Kentucky, and we're rolling along. My dad and I are working on building the platforms for the CompuTrainer Studio in the midst of lots of excitement at SBRKY. Today I snapped a photo of the progress on the platform, and included a shot of the newly installed mirrors. We'll be back at it again tomorrow, but I just wanted to thank everyone for the positive vibes, and the smooth transition into my new position. Hope to see ya soon, and look back for updates.

Happy New Year
Jan 01, 2010
|
|
As we launch Swim Bike Run of Kentucky into 2010, our team is hard at work setting up the triathlete center at 320 N. Ashland Avenue in Lexington. Coach Eric now has a desk in his new office complete with file cabinets. Fiber optics have been run thru the center as we prepare for computer set-ups. We're building a changing area in the training half of our tri center, and next week the stage is going in for the CompuTrainers. Three large TV screens will be mounted on the walls in the indoor cycling studio along with mirrors. Cabinets are ready in the bike repair and maintence area. Shelving and displays are due in next week. We're lining up more products for you to choose from including Aquaman wetsuits, 2XU compression wear, Profile Design bike gear, and DeFeet socks. Soon we'll invite you to drop by, bring your bike, and experience CompuTrainer. Many of you have joined our Facebook, and we're gathering race information to help you plan your 2010 triathlon season. It's exciting to see the dream coming to life! Much more to come!

Indoor cycling studio
Dec 29, 2009
|
|
Coming soon are the latest pictures of our indoor cycling studio at 320 N. Ashland Avenue where 9 CompuTrainers will be set up with 3 large LCD's. The folks at Walker Properties have been working hard on getting the space ready with fresh paint and new electrical. As the temperature dips into the teens this weekend, and ice covers the roads, I can't think of a better place to work out those cycling muscles and train with a group of riders!
We can't wait for you to drop by, bring your bike, and take CompuTrainer for a ride!

If you are like me, and have waited to shop until the last minute, have we got a deal for you! We’re just days away from Christmas, and I’m just starting to think about shopping. I know time is running out! Some of you asked us if we would have gift certificates available, and we worked hard to get them for you. At the same time, we continue to line -up more great tri gear products for our opening in February. In addition to 2XU tri suits, shorts, tops, wetsuits, and compression gear, we will feature Tifosi sunglasses, Louis Garneau helmets and running apparel, bikes from Ceepo, Blue, Scott, and Quintana Roo, plus ISM bike saddles and DeFeet socks. And that’s just for starters! Our Swim Bike Run of Kentucky gift certificate is easy to do and quick. You have two choices: print out the gift certificate to wrap and put under the tree, or you can email the gift certificate directly to the person you are giving it to. Just an idea in case you’re running tight on time, and want to reward your favorite triathlete gal or guy! Merry Christmas from Swim Bike Run of Kentucky!

Home at Last
Dec 13, 2009
|
Well I’m happy to be writing this from on my couch in the lovely city of Lexington in the state of Kentucky. I am very glad to be home and I look forward to spending some time with my friends and family. To give you a little insight yesterday was a long and exciting day of travel. I decided to go to the airport early with one of my friends from bike school. The night before Ashland was hit with a dose of freezing rain so I awoke to ice covering the sidewalks and roadways. The shuttle came to pick me up about 7am PT and we started the 30 min drive to the Medford airport. After a slip and slide ride to the airport and a hand full of white knuckles we pulled up to the front gate. I was elated to be safely at the airport but disappointed to find that all runways were closed and they were not sure if the airport would open at all for the day due to ice on the runway. I decided to go ahead and check my bags and play the waiting game as I had nothing else to do but hope for the best. As it turns out the best (or at least good enough) was exactly what I got. The first flight out of Medford left at noon and my flight was shuttled off quickly after. My flight was only about 30 min late so I landed in Portland with about 5 inins to make my next flight. I ran through the airport and made it to the next plane with minutes to spare. The rest of the travel was pretty uneventful and I was home in my bed last night by 1 am. As I have stated before this experience was something I wouldn’t change for anything and look forward to applying what I’ve learned. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Make sure to check back for more updates.
P.S. Don’t forget tomorrow’s my birthday if you see me be nice!

UBI Last Day
Dec 11, 2009
|
Well, tomorrow I hop on a plane and make my way back to the bluegrass. Although I’ve loved my time here, I’m ready to get back to Lexington, see my family, and start applying everything I’ve learned.
Today was a shortened day including a small lecture, a written test, and a graduation ceremony (that’s right I graduated). The day (just like the two weeks) went by really quick. Right now I’m sitting in my room packing a few things up so I’m ready to leave in the morning. I’ll go out to have some dinner with one of my friends tonight; then back for one more nights sleep in the great city of Ashland, OR.
Here’s hoping that everything goes smoothly tomorrow with all my travel. If you’ve been reading this I appreciate your time, and I hope to see many of you when I get back. Until next time.

Welcome Ceepo Tri Bikes
Dec 11, 2009
|
As the clock ticks down towards our opening in February, we are working hard to bring you the finest in triathlon gear. We’re pleased to bring Ceepo triathlon bikes to Kentucky. Coach Eric, our Director of Operations, was fortunate to meet and talk with the founder of Ceepo, Joe Tanaka, at Worlds in Clearwater, Florida last month. We’re impressed with Ceepo’s dedication to producing a superior and super fast bike that is designed specifically for the demands of triathlon. Ceepo is not a road bike company that markets one of their bike models to triathletes. Ceepo bikes and frames are developed by triathletes for triathletes. We think you’ll enjoy testing a Ceepo tri bike on the road!

UBI Update Overhaul Day
Dec 10, 2009
|
I’m writing this during a study break this evening so once again I apologize if this is brief, but I plan on spending the rest of the evening studying for my test tommorrow. The test (as I’m told) is a 100 question multiple choice test that covers all the information covered over the past two weeks. We have 1 and a half hours to complete the test, and although I feel like there is plenty of time I still don’t want to leave it to chance.
Today went really quickly as we spent the entire day on our feet working on overhauling bikes. I find that more hands on and less class time make the day go much faster. After a successful overhaul it was off to pick up a few study supplies followed by an early dinner. Now I’m back in the room “crackin the books”, and preparing for my last day of class in the morning. Although the class has been amazing, and I’ve learned a lot I’m as excited about coming back home as I am with finishing the class. However, the UBI group has many different classes, and if I do have the chance I will return and continue my bicycle education.
I’ll let everyone how I think the test goes tomorrow, until then have a great night!!

UBI Update Day 8

Sorry this is short but there’s not much to report today. I have my overhaul tomorrow and after my long cold walks today I am completely wiped. I hope to have more to report on tomorrow. Have a good evening and GO CATS!

UBI Update Class Day #7
Dec 08, 2009
|
Good evening everyone. I hope that the wind in Lexington isn’t blowing everyone away. Funny enough, Beth and I spend a great deal of our evening discussions comparing weather between Ashland and Lexington. It seems right now we have the lowest temperatures, but you have the gale force winds. Suffice to say everyone is enjoying a different part of what mother nature has to offer.
Today was another cold start to the day, and I arrived at UBI with frozen eyelashes, and getting laughed at by a few of my friends who had arrived at the same time. Once I was inside the building I was happy to hear that the cold weather wasn’t in my head because the water to the building was frozen (no bathroom or water for the AM sessions.) Despite the lack of water and bathroom facilities we forged on and completed the morning session. After lunch we returned to running water and operating bathroom facilities. The rest of the day went quickly, and before I knew it I was on my way home.
I believe I mentioned it before, but I’m making my best efforts to get back on east coast time this week. I’ve been trying to cut a little off the night by going to sleep earlier and getting up earlier. Tonight my goal is to be in bed by 8:30pm and be up by 4:45am. The times are a lot easier than they seem, but my whole schedule is out of whack so sometimes it’s hard to make heads or tails of times.
I’ll leave you with the photo to the left which happens to be a picture of me on my walk to school this morning. As you can see I take every precaution, safety first.

It’s Cold Out Thar (UBI Update)
Dec 07, 2009
|
I have about a 20- minute walk in the morning from the motel I stay at to the UBI classroom. When I got up this morning I checked the weather on my computer to find the current temperature to be 18 degrees. I mulled around for a while getting myself ready to face the day with an estimated departure time of 7:20 am. I decided to look at the weather one more time before I actually got dressed, and by this time the wind had kicked up, and the temperature with the wind chill was only 6 degrees. Although it was a bit cold on the walk to class it wasn’t unbearable, and all I had to show for myself by the time I got there were some frozen eyelashes. Needless to say I was wide awake by the time I got to class and ready to get going.
Today we spent most of the day going over different styles of braking systems from different companies, and the proper ways to maintain and install them. I suppose I didn’t realize how many different styles of brakes there were, but after today and tomorrow I should be on my way to being well versed. After class I spent some time exploring downtown Ashland, OR. The town is small with lots of shops in the downtown area that tend to focus on showcasing local art and crafts. Everything here seems very slow and laid back which suits me just fine. Apparently the town plays host to a Shakespeare festival each year that generates a large number of tourists.
One of the most amazing things about this area is the cities awareness of conservation, recycling, renewable energy and overall organic lifestyles. The building I am taking my class in recycles almost everything we use during the class, and the building is 60% run on solar energy. It amazes me that back home we make an effort to try and recycle what we can, and out here they throw away almost nothing. I know that everyone has to start somewhere, but I guess I had no idea to what lengths other parts of the country had already gone. Have a good night and stay warm.

Back to School
Dec 06, 2009
|
It’s been a really quick weekend, and already it’s time to go back to class tomorrow morning. Saturday was an amazing day for me as a college sports fan. I was able to watch the UK vs. UNC basketball game here in Oregon, and although the team tried to give me a heart attack I was ecstatic about the win over another quality team. After the UK game it was on to the the U of AL and Florida SEC Championship game. (For those of you that don’t know me I was born and raised in Alabama.) I spent the rest of the day catching up with friends and family on the telephone, and before I knew it the day was over.
Sunday flew by even more quickly than Saturday. I woke up early, and met a friend to do laundry for the week. After an invigorating bout of laundry I came back to my room, and spent the rest of the day studying the materials for the class. Apparently a good read will make the hours fly past because the next time I looked out the window the sun was gone and my stomach was growling. I had a delicious dinner, and now I’m off to bed with hopes of coercing my body back on to east coast time over the course of this week.
Hope everyone has a good week, and look for more updates to come.

Example of CompuTrainer Studio
Dec 06, 2009
|
I wanted you to see what our CompuTrainer studio will look similar to. This is the CompuTrainer studio at Well-Fit in Chicago. We liked the professional, clean look of it. There are 16 CompuTrainers set up facing two large viewing screens. You bring your bike in, and hook it up to the trainer. For convenience, you can also store your bike at the center. You can ride bike courses around the world, race each other, or yourself. It’s an awesome way to train for beginners and veterans. Our members will have exclusive use of the CompuTrainers for group rides throughout the week.

UBI Update Week !
Dec 04, 2009
|
Week one is over and I must say, I’m ready for a break. I have enjoyed the first week of class, but with all the information they have given us I am ready to take a break. We finished the week focusing on drive trains. I even got to play with a few mountain bikes today. All in all I wasn’t ready to leave, but I was worn out. I have the weekend to myself so I’m going to try to find a place to watch the UK vs UNC basketball game, and maybe do some laundry.
I know I’m learning a lot here in Oregon, but I really miss my family, and will be more than ready to head home next week. I’ll have more to come as the class progresses, but for now everyone have a safe weekend. GO CATS!

Endless Pool Example
Dec 04, 2009
|
When we visited Chicago last weekend, we really liked the layout at Well-Fit. It included a pool similar in size to the Endless Pool that we will install at our Lexington training center. You can see stairs at one end, and the Swim Unit at the other end that features 52 incremental steps in speed. You may also notice the mirrors at the bottom that give you another view of your swimming stroke. This pool is 18X6 1/2, and about 4 1/2 feet deep…plenty large enough for a single swimmer. Seeing it in person really got us excited about featuring it in Lexington!

UBI Update #3
Dec 03, 2009
|
I thought for today I would give you a little bit of my point of view for a day at the UBI Institute. To the left is the view I see from my desk each morning before the lectures begin. The day starts at 8am and continues til about noon where we have a lunch break. After lunch we return for another 4 hours of fun and we get out of class around 5pm. All and all I have to say that the days fly by. Today we had the opportunity to take several hubs apart and look into their inner workings. Once again I cannot say enough about how good this school has been. If anyone cares to check it out you can go to http://www.bikeschool.com and look at the right side of the homepage. There’s a link to “Photo’s of Current Class”. See if you can find me in the page of photos. It’s like where’s Waldo. Hope you are all doing well.

Welcome Coach Beth & Quintana Roo
Dec 03, 2009
|
We welcome Coach Beth Atnip to the Swim Bike Run of Kentucky team. Her experience coaching athletes of all ages and abilities, and her passion for the triathlon sport make her a great fit. Beth is also one of the top women triathletes in her age group in the state of Kentucky so she knows what it takes to train and compete. As many of you already know, she also does a super job directing the Susan Bradley-Cox Tri For Sight race in Lexington every Fall. We look forward to having Coach Beth lead some of our clinics, training, and lactate threshold testing. For more on Beth check her bio under “About Us.”
We also welcome a pioneer in building and developing triathlon bikes. Swim Bike Run of Kentucky is now a dealer for Quintana Roo…the first in Kentucky! These folks invented the triathlon bike. In 1987, the first-ever triathlon bike debuted at Ironman New Zealand, and was quickly criticized for how strange it looked. Those doubts turned to respect when Ray Browning came off his “odd” tri-bike with a 30-minute lead. Now to 2009, and Quintana Roo features 9 models of triathlon-specific bikes plus 2 new models that are closer to a road bike. We’re excited about introducing you to Quintana Roo…the first of several bike brands we will feature at our center. Stay tuned, much more is coming! And keep those surveys coming!

UBI Update #2
Dec 02, 2009
|
Hello again. Hope this finds everyone doing well.
First I would like to say that Ashland, OR is a very beautiful city and I recommend that anyone come and visit. On that same note I will suggest that you make your plans in the summer months. The last two days the city has been stuck in ice fog, for those of you that don’t know what that is I can explain. The concept is simple the city is in a cloud and everywhere the moisture touches it freezes. This type of weather makes everything slick and manages to make you cold very quick. It’s been a rude wake up for the winter months.
Ok, sorry for the rambling I’ll get to the update.
Today was a review for me on the workings of the drive train. Most of the information was review but each day I’ve picked up something new. The staff here is very knowledgeable and diverse. Everyone comes from a different background so each has their own story and experience to bring to the table. To be completely honest I don’t think that I would enjoy the class nearly as much if the staff wasn’t so engaging. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos today so I’ll leave you with a picture I took yesterday of my first wheel build.

UBI Update #1
Dec 01, 2009
|
Greetings from Ashland, OR,
This is my first blog for Swim Bike Run of KY, and although I have a lot going on right now, I’m going to keep this short and sweet.
If you need me in the next couple of weeks I’ll be in Oregon at the UBI professional bike mechanics school. So far I am very impressed with the staff and curriculum of the course. After two full days I have learned so much valuable information that I hope can help everyone back in Lexington. Today I built my first set of bike wheels. Spending an entire day building a set of wheels; then being asked to tear them down when you’re finished really makes you appreciate how much work goes into the process. Despite the short life of my wheels, I did snap a few photos of the process and of the area. I hope everyone is doing well, I look forward to coming home once the classes are finished.

Back from Chicago
Nov 30, 2009
|
Wow, and more wow! Our team from Swim Bike Run of Kentucky has just returned from visiting some of the top triathlete and running shops in Chicago.
We soaked up a weekend full of ideas from some of the best in the Midwest. Their enthusiasm for serving multi-sport athletes only added to our excitement about bringing you the best training and outfitting center. We visited several indoor cycling studios with CompuTrainer which we will feature in Lexington. This virtual cycling is a big hit across the U-S, and we saw firsthand how different centers set it up, and use it. Many of you have told us on our survey ( please take it if you haven’t had a chance) your interest in also using the Endless Pool for stroke analysis, and we toured some training centers featuring the one we’re planning to install. It’s 18X6 feet…plenty large enough for a single swimmer to receive instruction and practice their stroke. We believe in offering you top quality tri apparel, and to that end we will feature tri suits, tops, shorts, and wet suits from 2XU. While in Chicago the sales rep from 2XU met with us, and showed off the apparel we’ll be bringing to Lexington for 2010. I’ve raced in a 2XU tri suit, and we’re excited to offer it at Swim Bike Run of Kentucky. Compression gear is another piece of tri apparel that is taking off around the U-S, and we had a chance to see the latest on that from several different companies. The triathlon/multi-sport community is very friendly, and we made a new friend who had tons of suggestions and ideas for us to bring back to Lexington. Mark Rouse is one of the owners of Runners High ‘N Tri in Chicago, and he was very generous with advice about operating a first-class center. If you are ever in Chicago, check out Mark’s running store.
It’s a busy time as we work towards opening day early next year. As I write our Director of Operations, Coach Eric Atnip, is in Oregon for two weeks at the United Bicycle Institute. He’s honing his skills on running our bike shop. Look for Eric’s blog on his classes and trip out West.
Talk to you soon!

Happy Thanksgiving
Nov 27, 2009
|
We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. While many shoppers are looking for bargains on this so-called, Black Friday, our Swim Bike Run of Kentucky team is headed to Chicago. It’s a sightseeing trip of a triathlete kind. We’re visiting some of the top multi-sport shops in the country to see how they do it right, and we plan on bringing a lot of that knowledge back with us to Lexington. We’re very interested in seeing their indoor cycling studios featuring the CompuTrainer. Our plan includes 8 CompuTrainers at our Lexington training center so groups of riders can experience indoor training at a whole new level. We also want to see some of the Endless Pool setups. We’ve had a very positive response to our survey about using the Endless Pool for stroke analysis, and we’re ready to feature it in our training center. (If you haven’t taken the survey, please do). Coach Eric Atnip, our Director of Operations, and his wife Beth, a USAT Certified Race Director and Coach, along with my partner, Noelle, and I are looking forward to learning from some of the best. I’ll let you know how this road trip turns out!

Getting Started
Nov 23, 2009
|
One of the most exciting aspects of getting this training and outfitting center off the starting line has been hearing from all of you. We really want to give you all the tools you need to enjoy this sport. I hope you will check our survey, and tell us what you want and need. This really is “your” home for triathlon training and gear. But our center also goes way beyond the products. We’re putting together a group of local experts who have trained, raced, and lived the sport. They will be there to share with you what they’ve learned. We’re also very excited about a great way to train indoors called CompuTrainer. We will have a state of the art, indoor cycling studio set-up which allows up to eight riders to train together. You bring your bike, we hook it up to the computer system, and off you go in front of a big screen. On the screen you see the course, and the computer adjusts the difficulty of your pedaling. Don’t worry Coach Eric will be there to make sure you have a great training experience. We will have early sign-ups for the CompuTrainer, and invite you to take a ride during a weekend, open-house. You don’t have to be a triathlete to use this system. Cyclists of all abilities will enjoy and benefit from CompuTrainer. We’ll talk more about the CompuTrainer in the weeks to come, and there’s so much to share about our clinics and other services. Right now, we’re busy getting the center ready, and fully stocked with what you need. We appreciate your feedback. Don’t forget to click on the survey, and we look forward to you dropping by for a visit. We’ll keep you updated on our opening, and please spread the word about Swim Bike Run of Kentucky. Talk to you soon!
